You have heard term “get your beauty sleep.” There is truth behind this statement.
Did you know lack of sleep could actually make you gain weight? Lack of sleep can make you hungrier and crave not so healthy foods.
I am not going to get too scientific with you, but I would like to give you a general understanding why this happens.
There are 2 hormones that play a major role in this process, ghrelin and leptin.
Ghrelin is the hormone that tells you when to eat. When you are sleep deprived your ghrelin levels increase, therefore your body is telling you to eat more often.
Leptin is the hormone that tells you to stop eating. When you are not getting enough sleep, you have low levels of leptin, which will cause you to over eat. Not good!
Let’s take a look at some ways to help you get a better night’s sleep and lose those unwanted pounds.
- Take a hot bath before you go to bed. Dr. Joyce Walselben, associate professor at New York University of Medicine, recommends soaking in a bathtub for 20-30 minutes two hours before bedtime. When you take a hot bath, it causes your temperature to rise. Then, you have a rapid cool down period, which causes you to relax and have a much deeper sleep.
- Drink a cup of chamomile tea before bedtime. Chamomile is a white-pedaled flower with the active ingredient called apigenin, which promotes restful sleep.
- Remove all lit screens from your bedroom. Make sure you are not watching television or checking your emails in bed. Lit screens are very stimulating to the body and it’s best to avoid them at bedtime. I recommend a calming activity at bedtime, such as reading a book.
- Magnesium supplements can help you sleep at night. It helps to relax your muscles and give you that calm sleepy feeling to help you unwind.
